Course Description: In many areas of the country, driving a car is equivalent to remaining independent. Therefore, many elderly individuals are reluctant to give up driving unless it is absolutely necessary. As proactive physical therapists, driving safety can and should be considered part of instrumental activities of daily living (IADLs). This course is designed to give therapists the tools and knowledge to screen the elderly driver to determine his continued safety behind the wheel. Course Objectives: Upon completing this course the participant will: Indentify and discuss issues related to safe driving in older adults Recognize medical conditions and medications that may influence individuals’ driving ability. Be able to perform predriving assessment and functional testing of driving ability and analyze the findings effectively Determine impairments and functional limitations which affect driving which may be improved with PT intervention Identify other professionals who may assist in improving driving independence Discuss methods of counseling persons who should no long
