Concussion: Silos, Tribes, & Where We Are In Healthcare?

Jessica Schwartz, PT DPT

APTA spokeswoman Jessica Schwartz specializes in the identification, rehabilitation, and health care advocacy in concussion management.  In 2018 she founded Concussion Corner Podcast in an effort to collaborate with international concussion experts, athletes, and survivors facilitating the conversation of collective competence in health care. She has moderated concussion and traumatic brain injury (TBI) events at the 2018 Super Bowl and the world’s first International Summit on Female TBI and Concussion in 2016. Schwartz is a member of the American Headache Society, National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA), where she holds certification as a certified strength and conditioning specialist, and the American Academy of Orthopaedic Manual Physical Therapists.

Track I: Working with Tactical and Combat Athletes

Speaker:  Richard B. Westrick, PT, DPT, DSc, OCS, SCS

Rich is the Special Interest Group Chair for the American Academy of Sports PT.  He is also an Associate Professor at the MGH Institute of Health Professions, School of Rehabilitation and Health Sciences. He works as an ORISE Research Fellow at the Military Performance Division, U.S. Army Research Institute of Environmental Medicine. Richard does research in Rehabilitation Medicine, Sports Medicine and Physiotherapy. Their most recent publication is 'Underreporting of Musculoskeletal Injuries in the US Army: Findings From an Infantry Brigade Combat Team Survey Study.'

 

Track II: Innovative Stroke and Neurological Rehab Treatment Approaches

Speaker:   J.J. Mowder-Tinney PT, PhD, NCS, C/NDT, CSRS, CEEAA

J.J. received her Bachelor of Science in Psychology from the University of Colorado, Boulder and her Master of Science in Physical Therapy from University of Miami in Florida. She completed her doctorate in physical therapy at NOVA Southeastern University. She has over 20 years of experience in a multitude of clinical settings with the majority of experience with people with neuromuscular deficits.  She is certified as a clinical specialist in Neurologic Physical Therapy by the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties (ABPTS).  She also has extensive training and is certified in Neuro-Developmental Treatment (NDT), earned her Certified Stroke Rehabilitation Specialist (CSRS) from the American Stroke Association and her Certified Exercise Expert in Aging Adults (CEEAA) from the Academy of Geriatric Physical Therapy. She conducts nationwide seminars on the Treatment of Patients with Neurological deficits, Spinal cord injuries, Balance Challenges, Motor Learning, and Parkinson’s Disease.
