Why are you a member?

I have been a member of APTA and NHAPTA for almost 30 years now. I have always considered it my responsibility to support my professional organization because I knew that APTA was always working on my behalf to both protect and advocate for our scope of practice and to advance the impact that physical therapy can have on society. I also have taken advantage of the multitude of continuing education and professional development opportunities offered through the APTA.

With my involvement in Chapter leadership over the past 4 years I have gotten an up-close view of the efforts APTA and our Chapter makes to support physical therapy and appropriate patient access to physical therapy services. Being involved makes me feel like I am attempting to be part of the solution to the challenges that face physical therapists every day and that our advocacy efforts give voice to those concerns. Another reason I am a member and someone who decided to get more involved in the Chapter is because my wife is a PT, my son is a student in a DPT program, and I have many close friends who are therapists. I am here to do my part to support and advocate for their future in this great profession as well as the future of every other physical therapist in NH.

What is your favorite moment as an NHAPTA member?

My favorite moments as an NHAPTA member are when I get to speak with students who are the motivated, thoughtful and engaged future of our profession. Having time to chat with them and witness their enthusiasm for the journey they are embarking on fuels and reignites my enthusiasm for all things PT. We have two amazing DPT programs in NH (Franklin Pierce University and Plymouth State University) as well as a great PTA program at River Valley Community College in Claremont. These students embody what is right with our profession and have demonstrated to me a level of commitment to physical therapy that will certainly serve us all well in the future. I also had the privilege to speak at the National Student Conclave in Providence, RI this past October and that experience was particularly memorable because again, I interacted with many students who had great, inquisitive questions and perspectives on where they feel the profession should go. Their motto definitely seemed to be “We can do this!” when it came to tackling tough issues, rather than wavering with uncertainty or wondering if they can actually make a difference. They already are making a positive difference and their advocacy “genes” are fully embedded and ready to go!

In your free time, what do you enjoy doing?

I have a vague recollection of “free time” but when I do have it I spend it with my family. My three kids are all in college and we enjoy catching up with what is happening in each other’s lives and getting together when we can. I love to hike and ski and have started to pick up an old love of running by participating in 5Ks again.
