What is a PT journal club?

A PT journal club is a meeting of a group of physical therapists and/or physical therapist assistants, designed to present, review, discuss and critically analyze recent articles, germane to the common clinical interests for promotion of evidence-based practice.  It is a great way to help keep up with the professional literature and have valuable conversations with colleagues with the same practice interests.

How would we meet?

Zoom is a video conferencing platform that allows for synchronous distance meetings.  It is easy to use and the only requirement is reliable internet and a computer with video capability, or a smart phone.  An invitation will be sent shortly before the meeting.  Simply click on the link right before the meeting and join with video and audio, so participants can see and hear each other and the Powerpoint presentation.  If you are not familiar with Zoom, one-on-one practice sessions can be arranged.

How much preparation is required?

For any given session, one member takes on the role of presenter and prepares slides that cover the basic components of the article.  Other members add in to the discussion as much as they choose.  Of course, the more you know about the article coming in to the meeting, the more you will get out of it, but the article will be summarized during the presentation and more difficult concepts (including methodologies and statistical analysis) can be explained.  Members shouldn’t feel intimated to join a meeting because they don’t feel like they know enough about the article, the topic, or research in general.
